Mylin’s Angry Pancreas

Mylin’s finishing up sometime with the anesthesia team and then will be sent over to the PICU.

We just left our meeting with Dr. Nathan. He said everything went just as well as you could hope for. Although we didn’t get the islet yield we had hoped for ( and like I said, we knew that would likely be the case ), dr. Nathan confirmed he was able to save the Spleen! This is such good news. It means Mylin may not have severe autoimmune issues, it also means that Mylin may not have to take one extra medication called hydroxyurea because their platelet count will be more controlled. As I said earlier, it also means one less drain tube and possibly an easier recovery.

Dr. Nathan did say that when they took the pancreas out there was a lot of scar tissue in the surrounding area. He said the pancreas had barely any tissue left at all it was so severely scarred and atrophied. He described it as a halo of scar tissue completely surrounding the pancreas. This may be tricky with stomach pain and nausea. However, we keep saying things could end up even better than we hoped for so that’s what we’re pulling for! They weren’t able to do a plexus block because there was too much scar tissue to wade through to get to where it would need to be applied.

They are currently trying to wake Mylin up so that they can take out the breathing tube.

The biggest Takeaway is that surgery was successful and we got to keep the spleen!!

Now we wait for them to get up in the PICU so that we can visit them there!
