The ideal amount of islets collected is at least 5000 per kg, My had just 1300. While this doesn’t mean they won’t work out in the liver, it’s obviously not what you hope for. We knew this would be likely due to how dead My’s pancreas already was. They will come back later and let us know how strong/healthy those islets are. They are preparing to transplant the islets and depending on how many the liver will accept and/or how high the pressure within the main artery gets, will play into how much time the transplant will take. Christie said generally it’s 15 minutes to 1 hour. Once that is complete, Christie will come back out and talk us through the health of the islets and how the transplant went. She’ll also give us all the info on the PICU. Then Dr. Nathan will meet with us and go over everything we should know about the day and any questions we might have.
