Social Services, Psychology, G.I. doctor, and Nutritionist
Today was another long day. This one we were unprepared for, because MyChart showed us only one of these visits. Ohhh technology lol 🤦♀️.
For the social worker and psychologist it was mainly about getting a good feel about Mylin’s mental health and us as a family. This surgery is a big deal and the recovery is long and daunting, so they want to make sure everyone is in a place where they can handle that stress and hardship in a healthy way. There were lots of questions. Family history stuff. What’s home life look like, who is involved in your life on a weekly basis, how do you deal with stress..: lots of that stuff at length. There was also a physical questionnaire we filled out about Mylin. They asked about how the disease affects Mylin and our family, what the pain looks like, and how deal with it all. They also let us know the parts they would play in the recovery as well as encouraged us to have mental resources at home.
Next we visited with G.I. This doctor had the most non-jovial serious demeanor of everyone we visited with this week. It was funny because I felt like that already (I am usually quick to get a read on someone) and then Daniel mentioned it as soon as we were at the elevators. I think his approach seemed to come from really not wanting to make you feel like he was leaning one way or another, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say it was wet blanket energy total wah wah at first. Like I felt sad. He did make a joke at one point and I was like ok he’s trying to lighten the mood. As he explained more he said there were two main things we had missed. One turned out we actually had already done, and one we aren’t really a candidate for any longer. Therefore, in the end it seems like he was also saying surgery is really the only thing to possibly help what Mylin has going on. Although, he was sure to drive home IF the pancreas is the ONLY thing causing the issue.
