Mixed Meal Testing (fasted), Infectious Disease, Endocrinology, and Diabetes Care
Longggg day today. Checked into the first appointment at 6:45am (3:35am CA time 😴) for fasted Mixed Meal Testing. My had their blood drawn every 15 minutes for over 2 hours and the entire visit took 3 hours. Next we had an appointment with infectious disease. This appointment mostly stressed that for at least the first year after surgery (if not longer, depending on circumstances) My would be considered extremely immunocompromised. A fever over 100.5 would mean immediate run to the ER within an hour. Much of this do to the likelihood of the loss of the spleen after the surgery. We also had to talk about vaccines, both those we have already had and the extra ones we’d need before surgery. My got 3 vaccinations today, since we are hopeful they will get to have this surgery sooner rather than later. They drove home that My will have to stay far away from sick people for that first year and even stay home from school during outbreaks. Probably hardest for My is avoiding the neighborhood stray cats and other strange animals. Lastly and at length we visited with a team of 4 for endocrinology/diabetes care. Since we have done a lot and I mean a lot of research, much of this was information we already knew. This was the first appointment they really went into what the surgery. They spoke in detail about diabetes 3C, insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring, insulin pens, insulin IVs, and what all of that would look like after surgery. Of course, there is no way to know how many healthy islets will be harvested and successfully transferred to know if the insulin pump would be permanent. Honestly, all of that even pales in comparison to what My had been going through. We were also told we’d be attending 4 online educational sessions of 3 hours each to ensure we knew how to care for My and all that new equipment and needs. Those will be scheduled as soon as the surgery has the green light. The team sits down each Thursday at a round table event sort of situation to discuss cases and if they are a good fit for the procedure, so we won’t hear back for a week or longer after we are done here. Last appointment ended at 5pm.
